Pin the roads you already trust

Traffic feels worst when you are going fast and have little time to react – arriving at a busy junction at the bottom of a descent, or being pushed wide on a fast downhill bend. A flat elevation profile keeps your speed even and your options open where roads meet.

Choose the flat profile whenever the terrain allows, and check the elevation chart before you leave. A route that reads as gently rolling in the app can still hide one fast descent onto a road you would rather join slowly.

Check the route on the map before you commit to it

No router knows that the cycle lane on one road stops halfway, or that a particular roundabout is genuinely frightening on a bike. Before you ride a generated loop, scan it for the crossings and short connector sections where it touches a main road, and check those spots on satellite or street view if you do not know them.

Two things fix most problems for free. Ride at a quieter time of day – mid-morning or early afternoon instead of the commute – and if one section still looks wrong, generate again: each run gives you a completely different loop from the same settings, so a route without that bad stretch is usually one tap away.
