GPX Export: Load Your Bike Route onto Garmin, Wahoo & More
GPX is the universal exchange format for routes: virtually every bike computer, sports watch and navigation app can read GPX files. If you would rather not follow your generated route on your phone, simply export it and load it onto your device.
This guide walks through exporting from VeloRand and importing to the most common devices – step by step.
What is a GPX file?
GPX (GPS Exchange Format) is an open XML file containing waypoints and tracks – the exact course of your route as a sequence of GPS coordinates. Because the format is open, it works across vendors: from Garmin and Wahoo to apps like Komoot or OsmAnd.
Exporting a route from VeloRand
The export takes seconds: generate a route or open a saved one, choose the export function, and share or save the GPX file. Via the Android share sheet you can send the file straight to your navigation app, your cloud storage, or over USB to your bike computer.
Loading GPX onto Garmin, Wahoo and your phone
Getting the file onto the most common devices:
- Garmin Edge: import the GPX in Garmin Connect (app or web) under "Courses" and sync with the device – or copy the file via USB into the "NewFiles" folder.
- Wahoo ELEMNT: import the GPX in the ELEMNT app under "Routes"; syncing to the device happens automatically.
- Phone apps (Komoot, OsmAnd, Locus and others): open the GPX from the share sheet with the app – the route appears as an imported tour.
- Sports watches (Garmin, Suunto, Polar): import via the vendor portal, then select the course for navigation.
Common pitfalls when importing GPX
If your device does not show the route, it is usually one of three things: the file was copied to the wrong folder, the device was not restarted after copying, or the app expects an import via its own portal instead of a local file.
A tip on turn-by-turn quality: some devices recalculate navigation from the GPX track. After importing, quickly check that the displayed course matches the generated one – especially on devices that re-route.
